The Working Capitol is creating a network of working spaces through the launch of its second outfit in the CBD, cementing the idea that co-working is a more accessible and attractive option for organisations of all sizes.
The Working Capitol, a provider of co-working spaces since 2014, recently opened an Art Deco-inspired outfit situated at 140 Robinson Road.
The new place affords a wider range of amenities and ease of access for its members, who can now hop between the Keong Saik flagship site, which spans five historic shophouses that once contained a cookie factory, and the heart of Singapore’s CBD.
According to co-founder Saranta Gattie, the name ‘The Working Capitol’ is a play on the words capital, the lifeline of businesses, and Capitol, as in Capitol Hill, where the US legislature meet to discuss legal matters and where policies were once made.
Essentially, the brand hopes to meet demands for a greater diversity of working options for both new and traditional businesses, catering to companies staffed by just one person or 200 people.
We take a closer look at the inner workings of The Working Capitol.
WHO — The Creators
From playroom to boardroom, Ben and Saranta Gattie, a brother-sister team, have always been close. The duo continue to be inseparable as they work together to build and expand The Working Capitol, from the fringes of the CBD to Robinson. They hope to take the concept to a regional level one day.
Ben comes from a real-estate background, setting up his own business in Singapore after working for a property developer in New York, while Saranta immersed herself in the world of branding, and had the idea of setting up a co-working establishment while working in one during a stint in Myanmar. Between them, they’ve managed to marry their interests, founding a branded operations-base development with integrated components joined to a real-estate backbone.
WHY — The Purpose
Through the launch of the second space at Robinson, it is clear that the Gatties want to create a network of working spaces, cementing the idea that co-working is a more accessible and attractive option for organisations of all sizes.
“We want to create value for our members,” says Saranta. “Through our first space in Keong Saik, we got a sense of what everybody needs. Many members frequently head to the CBD area to meet clients but they also like the vibe of the Keong Saik hood. Therefore, they are happy to have more than one location to pop in for a meeting or to work for a day or two in the CBD.”
Ben adds: “Businesses can also evolve quite organically through such accessibility. We go further by facilitating collaborations, plus driving personal wellbeing and professional growth towards positive business outcomes. That’s what our two spaces have in common.”
AMENITIES — The Catalysts
Occupying about 55,000 square feet across 11 floors, The Working Capitol on Robinson is bigger than that of Keong Saik’s, which is 33,000 square feet. Combined, the floor space between the two locations is close to 90,000 square feet.
Most of the amenities are quite similar, providing members with different spaces to do their best work. There is an entire floor at Robison dedicated to pin-drop silence. Hot-desks, meeting rooms, shared or private offices and duplex penthouses are also available. According to Ben and Saranta, RHB Bank is occupying an entire floor for a FinTech lab division, while another level will be taken up entirely by a ‘tech unicorn’.
Similar to its flagship location on Keong Saik, events centred on personal and professional growth, health, wellbeing, arts and culture will continue to be a mainstay at The Working Capitol on Robinson.
With spaces available for hire and areas set aside for regular member gatherings, the community at Robinson can look forward to events such as members’ lunch, monthly mixers, skills-sharing series by industry thought-leaders, music unplugged sessions and more.
There will also be food and beverage options including Plain Vanilla on the first level; a gym run by a boutique fitness provider Ritual on the third level; and yes, a 20m outdoor lap pool on the sixth floor, overlooking other more somber-looking office spaces.
Ben says: “The reason we chose the building is because of the built-in pool. It is a nice amenity to have, especially in the CBD.”
Saranta chirps in: “We can have pool-side yoga sessions in the morning or simply have a party at night, and make the surrounding workplaces envious and potentially even join us!”
