Indonesia looks set to get a huge cash injection courtesy of Amazon.
Indonesia Finance Minister, Sri Mulyani Indrawati has said that Amazon are set to invest $944 to set up their cloud computing arm, Amazon Web Services (AWS) in Indonesia. She said that the investment will take place over 10 years and that checks will be put in place to ensure that Amazon are contract to the country's tax and regulations.
Speaking to local media, she said “Amazon met with (Indonesian President) Joko Widodo both in Hanoi and again today and conveyed its interest in Indonesia" and reports suggest that following the meeting with Amazon, President Widodo asked Indrawati’s department to handle new incentives to support the investment.
If Amazon goes ahead with the move, it will take it one step further to going head to head with its rival Alibaba whose cloud computing arm, Alibaba Cloud, moved to Indonesia in March.
