From games of badminton to finance reports and awards ceremonies, we take a look at a work week in the life of Roy Liang, General Manager of Oakwood Premier OUE Singapore.
It’s my morning ritual to kick start the day with a refreshing cup of Earl Grey Neroli! When I arrive at the property, I head to our in-house restaurant Se7enth, to make sure that the breakfast set up is ready for service. I’ll also chat with our in-house guests before they leave for work. The rest of the morning is spent with my respective operational department heads, understanding and discussing important issues and feedback from guests over the weekend. It is the time for us to set the week on fine-tuning the processes and focus on training to further improve our quality of service. On Mondays for lunch, I like to have a poke bowl after a weekend of overindulgence with my friends and family. I spend the afternoon reviewing HR related strategies and updates on recruitment and turnover with a cup of freshly brewed mocha of course – my guilty pleasure. In the evening, you’ll find me at Singapore Badminton Hall with a few intense sessions of badminton against fellow badminton enthusiasts. Having played the sport competitively since I was nine, I’ve always liked feeling the adrenaline rush and it’s fun reminiscing over my school days with the guys and bonding over badminton amidst our busy work schedules!
A daily morning routine check around the property is a must to ensure that cleanliness is always in tip top condition. This is followed by finance and credit meetings. I like to have lunch at Se7enth once a week, to try out the rotational executive lunch sets and give my feedback. We usually get quite a big crowd during lunch, thus this is the best time for me to see how the F&B team fares under peak periods. I continue my discussion with the financial controller, and later on I will work on procurement, issues related to IT and follow ups. After a day filled with meetings, I look forward to visiting my parents and have a simple home cooked meal with them. Right before I sleep, I enjoy watching a bit of standup comedy clips for some light entertainment before bed.
It's the middle of the week so the perfect time to take a look at our topline financial performance over the last week and reviewing sales records with the team. Once I’m done, I head over to join our housekeeping team in their meetings, as I like to keep them engaged and encouraged. After a long morning, I treat myself to local food from Amoy Street for lunch! The afternoon is spent touring the property with my security and safety manager, inspecting our fire safety procedure. I conduct spot checks and tests on the team from time to time, making sure that they are always operationally ready to deal with crisis. Wednesday nights are reserved for church enrichment sessions, where my wife and I will spend time together in church to find peace amidst our hectic lives. When I return home, I catch up with my reading on my kindle to wrap up the day.
I woke up feeling excited about tonight’s award ceremony. I started my day with getting through my emails and following up with the different departments on their past deadlines. I’m always thinking of new initiatives to implement on the property so that the services offered to our guests are always refreshing and innovative! Being located within walking distances to a few hawker centres in the CBD, we can easily find scrumptious local food. My favourite has to be Lau Pa Sat with its beautifully restored architecture and the variety of food choices. After a hearty lunch, I began testing the operational readiness of my staff from guest facing departments. It is vital that with teamwork, they can manage high volume of guests at any time without compromising on our service standards. Following that, I meet with my Chief Engineer to get updates on his meetings with the main project contractors and understand any main projects ongoing in the property. Finally, it’s time for us to make our way to Shangri-La Hotel! As we are the Gold Sponsor for the awards, I’m representing the team to present a total of six awards tonight. It’s indeed my honour to witness and celebrate the best HR solutions providers in Asia.
Fridays are a bit slower paced and I like to keep our morning meetings lively and light-hearted so that the team can wind down their stress level towards the end of the week. I spend some time with my Marketing Communications team, reviewing our marketing publicity and campaigns. I enjoy brainstorming with them on new marketing ideas and reviewing our strategies for both social and print media. For lunch, I venture out a little further by finding a nice café in Tanjong Pagar or exploring the new F&B outlets to get inspirations for Se7enth. The rest of the day is spent on business development plans and checking on the operations departments, such as the housekeeping team on their organisation, processes and inventory safekeeping. I wrap up the week collating reports for our corporate office and catching up with the owner’s representative to update them on the general performance of the property and to assure them that the business is heading in the right direction. After a long week of work, it's time for a date night with my wife and we like to try out nice sake bars or Italian restaurants. We share our experiences from the week about work to after work activities.
