Whether it's your first or your fortieth watch, it's a purchase you want to get right. So, without further adieu, here is our guide to the best new watch releases for this year.

AUDEMARS PIGUET RD#3

Audemars Piguet, or as they are often lovingly referred to, AP, are the true masters of understated luxury. This latest release from them, the RD#3 breaks the mould somewhat in that it is the first ever 'Jumbo' size in timepiece history to be equipped with a self-winding flying tourbillon which means less work for you each day. The stainless steel beauty measures 39mm and 3.4mm thick making it small but very, very mighty.

MAURICE LACROIX AIKON #TIDE

Sing it with me: all things bright and beautiful, Maurice Lacroix made them all. Available in a range of eye-popping colours including yellow, pink, blue and our favourite, orange, thanks to its revolutionary technology that converts discarded plastic waste into Swiss quality watches- it's also helping the oceans and environment too.

OMEGA SEAMASTER PLANET OCEAN ULTRA DEEP STEEL WATCH

Even if you are not a diver, you have to admit this is one impressive watch. Using state-of-the-art design, Omega's new Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep watch is water-resistant to 20,000ft, sand-blasted and forged in grade 5 titanium. Aesthetically, it has a brushed ceramic bezel with a liquidmetal diving scale to show you how far down you are reaching.

HERMES CAPE COD CREPUSCULE

Oh Hermes, how I love thee and thy Cape Cod watches. Originally created in 1991, the oh so chic and classic Cape Cod has been given a new breath of life thanks to inspiration from the e Neuchâtel-based Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology (CSEM) which sees a new dial on the square within a rectangle design. Made from a silicon wafer, it's dusk-like motif was created by designer/graphic artist, Thanh-Phong Lê.

BREITLING ENDURANCE PRO

Calling all watch collectors: Breitling have launched a special edition Endurance Pro to celebrate its long-standing partnership with iconic watch group, The Watches of Switzerland Group. Limited to just 650 pieces, it was designed in collaboration with the watch group and is, of course, available exclusively there. So thats a trip to London then.

BELL & ROSS BR 01 CYBER SKULL SAPPHIRE

When I saw that this was Bell & Ross, I had to do a slight second take. A real departure from the brand's signature military and aviation feel, there must be a demand for skulls over there because this is the line's 10th piece. The latest edition is totally translucent, rhodium-plated, 21 jewel movements, has a 48-hour power reserve and is full sapphire. Oh, and it's limited to just ten pieces.

G-SHOCK MTG-B2000XMG

Gone are the days when G-SHOCK were just starter watches as now each new launch gets bigger and seriously better. Case in point, this bad boy. Inspired by the amazing multi-layered volcanic Rainbow Mountain in Peru, this chunky and bold watch is made from carbon reinforced resin forged from laminated sheets of carbon and glass fibre, has a ion-plated bezel ring and comes with rose gold ion plating. Think we are done? Not quite, when all the parts of the watch are combined, they reproduce the oxidation of minerals deposited by volcanic activity and tectonic shifts from the Peruvian mountain. Impressive.
