Amazon's Seamless Supermarket Checkouts
You might soon be able to walk out of the supermarket without waiting in line at the register. The giant ecommerce company, Amazon, is putting AI to work in the supermarket with its Just Walk Out Technology -- a system that eliminates the need for cash registers or lines, where consumers simply grab their groceries and go, and have a bill tallied by AI. The company opened its first supermarket store, Amazon Go, in Seattle last year, equipped with its Just Walk Out technology that detects what customers take and automatically charges your Amazon account after you leave the store, using AI tools such as computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning. Though currently only being test-driven in the U.S., this could very well be the future of our grocery shopping experience.
Tesla’s Self-Driving Cars And Taxis
Since the end of last year, Tesla Motors have shifted toward an in-built radar system as the primary sensor for its Autopilot systems, replacing the previously used optical camera for a more accurate and seamless autopilot driving experience. The updated software system constructs a moving 3D ‘point cloud’ that evaluates objects over time, not just as a single snapshot,providing a more accurate assessment of potential dangers and obstructions on the road. The ‘learning’ machine works just like any form of AI that grows smarter and increases in accuracy as more people use it. This new enhancement is part of its grander masterplan to eventually combine the driverless technology with a ride-sharing programme, The Tesla Network, whereby Tesla owners will be able to add their cars to a pool of vehicles available for rent while not in use. If this dream amalgation of AI technology, electric powered engines and ride-sharing services is to be achieved, the company might just propel the global economy another step further toward the era of a sustainable energy.
Infervision’s Facial Recognition For Cancer Diagnosis
Facial recognition has been around for quite some time, being used for trivial things like tagging picture of your friends on Facebook or in google photos. However, led by Chinese startup, Infervision, the technology is quickly advancing with far-reaching implications on the healthcare sector. Traditionally, diagnoses of illnesses have relied on x-rays and scans to spot early warning signs of developing problems. Infervision aims to harness the power of deep learning and image recognition to assist in more accurate and timesaving cancer diagnoses. Deep learning involves the use of deep neural networks – algorithmic models designed to pass data along networks of nodes, mimicking the function of the human brain. Based on previous data sets where the diagnoses outcomes have already been recognised, the system adapts and ‘learns’ to spot images that indicate symptoms of danger. Instead of having a radiologist tediously examine hundreds of images everyday, the company’s technology assists in the repetitive diagnosis process with greater efficiency and accuracy. Following its pilot project with the Szechuan People’s Hospital, Infervision’s technology is already being used in a number of China’s top hospitals, helping to reduce the risk of human error and misdiagnoses.
